Horst Paetzold, President

Horst Paetzold joined the Novelty Salt and Pepper Shakers Club in 1994.  Horst and his wife Jane as a team have been collecting salt and pepper shakers since they were married in 1975.  They have attended all Conventions since Ohio in 2002. Horst has participated in many of the display contests, helped with the auctions and in the past several years, has been the official Photographer for the Club at Convention.

Horst served as Vice-President for the Club from 2021-2023 and President from 2023 till 2027.  Horst has been involved with the local Canadian Chapter, Shakers, Eh! since 1998.  He has held positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer and continues to be Newsletter Editor. He is also a member of the Pennsylvania Chapter, the European Chapter, the New Jersey Chapter and the California Chapter Shakers Anonymous.

Horst has been going to Antique stores, malls, and flea markets since he was a teen, and collects a variety of items.  After marrying Jane, she felt she needed to collect something also when they went to Antique markets.  Initially Jane tried cups and saucers, but after getting about 20 realized these were too large.  Then it was onto Salt and Pepper shakers with the purchase of a pair of chickens on a base.  This was the start of it all.

Jane and Horst’s collection has grown to over 27,000 sets.  Horst’s second busiest hobby has been building over 48 display cabinets to ensure all the shakers are on display.  His favorite shaker types are Disney, Cartoon characters and Goebel shakers although Jane loves them all except for plastic and wooden shakers.

Being a member of the Novelty Salt and Pepper Shakers Club has allowed Horst to make friends and meet collectors from all over North America and other parts of the world.  It has provided an opportunity to see collections, learn about all the different types of shakers, and savor the enjoyment of collecting shakers with them all.  Conventions in various parts of the USA have allowed time for exploration of the areas to both hunt for more shakers, but also experience the variety and beauty of all the areas.

Bonnie Clark, Vice President

Bonnie has been a member of the Novelty Salt and Pepper Shakers Club since 1996. An avid collector all her life, she collected dollhouse furniture, sugar and creamer sets, books, and vintage jewelry.  After attending tag sales and flea markets one year, she realized she had bought 6 sets of shakers. Her collection has continued to grow to approximately 8,000 sets. She collects whatever ‘speaks’ to her, especially any unique or odd sets. Her collection includes every type of media (ceramic, glass, wood, chalkware, metal and plastic).  She especially likes World Fair, Holt Howard, and sets that are personalized with names. She has over 100 wedding ring sets with names and dates.

Bonnie has been a member of the Yankee Chapter since 1996, after attending her first chapter meeting in Connecticut. She has served as Vice President and President.  Her daughter is now a member of the club and Ohio chapter.

Bonnie attended her first convention in New Jersey in 1998 and has attended most conventions since then. She worked planning the 2010 convention in Rhode Island, coordinating the 2022 New Jersey convention and has volunteered in other conventions.

Joining the club has led to lifelong friendships and travel to many interesting places.

Barry Yedlin, Treasurer

Barry has been an active member of the Novelty Salt & Pepper Shakers Club since 1991 and has been collecting shakers for over 30 years. He primarily collects bear salt and peppers (about 2,000), Arcadia minis and dog shakers that remind him of his late yellow Labrador, Taffy. The shakers are all on display in his home in cases he built.

He enjoys attending the annual convention. His first was in 1990 in Memphis, TN. He had such a great time and met so many wonderful people that share his enthusiasm for collecting shakers that he has attended every convention since then. Many lasting friendships have been made over the years.

Barry was Club Treasurer for six years and was re-elected to that position in July 2021.  Barry also served as Membership Coordinator from 2008 - 2020. He has been Registration Chairperson for three conventions. Barry was also active in the creation of the 2008 convention shaker and the 25th anniversary shaker.

His shaker passion continues in his support of local chapters.  He is a founding member of Shakers Anonymous (Northern California), a member of Golden State Shakers (Southern California) and president of the Grand Canyon chapter (Arizona). He enjoys attending and volunteering at the California mini conventions.

Barry and his wife Pat were awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

Angelle Arata, Secretary

Angelle has been a club member since 2014 and started collecting shakers a few years prior.  She founded the Gulf South Shakers chapter and currently serves as President. She is also a member of the Shakin’ Together European chapter.  Angelle has attended each convention since 2019 and has joined the newly formed theme committee to assist with future convention planning.

Professionally, Angelle has been a social worker for over 25 years and directs behavioral health initiatives for a large hospital system.  She currently serves on 2 other boards and chairs committees for community organizations and non-profits.  Angelle lives in the Greater New Orleans area and is super proud of her Cajun heritage, Louisiana culture and its culinary masterpieces. She is also a certified Master Naturalist, providing volunteer services and educational opportunities about local flora and fauna. When not browsing antique malls and flea markets for shakers, she enjoys cooking, camping, hiking, birding and being an avid amateur nature/wildlife photographer.

Alicia Lloyd, Membership Coordinator

Alicia is from Claremore, Oklahoma and has been married to her husband David since 1997. They have served as missionaries to Haiti since 1998.  Due to endless gang violence, they are mostly stateside nowadays.

Alicia has enjoyed shakers since she was a kid, and her Aunt Verl had a large collection she loved looking at.  When she passed, Alicia was given some of her shakers and then started collecting on her own.  She picked up shakers here and there and only ones she could afford (mostly under $10). Since joining the club in 2021and learning about shakers, Alicia is starting to refine her collection. She loves going to convention every year.

Ken Parisot, Newsletter Editor

Ken Parisot is a Northern California native and is on his second stint as Newsletter Editor. Ken previously served as Club President from 2021 to 2023 and as Newsletter Editor from 2013 until 2025. Ken joined the Club in 1995, and his first convention was in Southern California. He is also a member of Shakers Anonymous and currently serving as the treasurer for this local chapter in Northern California. He learned about the organization while shopping one afternoon in Vacaville California at Past N Presents gift shop.

He started collecting in 1978 when his Great Grandmother, Lily White, passed away at age 93. She left him with about fifty pairs of salt and pepper shakers in an old pickle barrel. He caught the bug when he unpacked this sentimental gift. The sets were given to his Great Grandmother as her children traveled on vacation and brought them back to her from all over the United States.

After 47 years of collecting his sets, around 10,000 pairs, which are all on display in his home. Although he appreciates all kinds of sets his favorites are Black Americana, Disney, and Shawnee Pottery. He is also a collector of approximately 350 cooker jars, about half of which have matching salt and pepper shakers.

Ken has attended most of the yearly national conventions since 1995. He tries to help where needed during the conventions by photographing the event and helping cashier for auctions. In 2024 Ken received the Lifetime Achievement Award which he was very honored to have received. His wife Debbie is not a salt and pepper collector but enjoys traveling to different locations as part of their summer vacations. They both feel they have made wonderful and close friends through the years.

Ken and Debbie live in Palo Cedro, CA (near Redding and the Oregon border) on a 5-acre plot on beautiful Cow Creek. The sign on their gate is “End of the Trail,” which is self-explanatory.
