Surprise!!!

These guys are so tall - nearly 7'' high, that some collectors might consider them "tall boys".  They are Japan imports (possibly to the Australian and New Zealand market) from the 1950s, with one set still having its original Japan paper label.

This small series of two anthropomorphic pea pods and watermelons are depicted in Karen Weaver's & Sylvia Tompkin's reference book Shakers Gone Wild - Anthropomorphic Salt & Pepper Shakers on page 131.  They called the series "Surprise!!!" - probably because each guy looks like they are going to shout surprise at a surprise birthday party or something.
